Eden Valley sits high and cool in South Australia, which is why Chardonnay grown there keeps its acidity and its shape. Yalumba, Australia's oldest family-owned winery, works this site with a light hand.
The wine is pale gold with green tints. Fresh aromas of peach sorbet, grapefruit zest and stone fruit lead the way, and the palate is generous with stone fruit and lemon curd, held together by a citrus acidity that keeps it refreshing rather than broad. Subtle notes of French oak, from barrels coopered by Yalumba itself, add texture without turning the wine buttery.
It is vegan friendly. Serve it lightly chilled, and let it warm slightly in the glass so the fruit opens.
Pour it with chicken and leek pie, creamy mash and steamed greens, or a leek and mushroom pie for a plant-based table. Roast chicken and grilled fish work just as well.
