Herdade do Sobroso farms in the Alentejo, the wide, warm south of Portugal that has quietly become one of Europe's most rewarding sources of full-flavoured red wine. Barrique Select is its oak-aged expression, built from four grapes that belong to the region: Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro.
Fermentation happens in temperature-controlled stainless steel, after which the wine spends twelve months in French oak barrels in contact with its lees before blending and bottling. That lees contact is what gives it texture rather than simply oak flavour.
The style leans on ripe red fruit, spice and balsamic aromas, with floral notes of violet and dried rose, soft supple tannins and polished acidity. Serve it at 15 to 16 degrees with grilled lamb, roast pork belly, black pork sausage, hard sheep cheese or anything cooked slowly over wood.
