Saint Clair Family Estate is one of Marlborough's best known names, and Vicar's Choice is its approachable range. The Pinot Noir draws on fruit from the Southern Valleys, the cooler, clay-rich part of Marlborough that gives the variety more structure than the flat valley floor.
The house style here is fruit driven and easy drinking, built on red berry fruit with delicate savoury notes alongside. The wine is cold soaked before fermentation and hand-plunged through it, then matured in seasoned French oak, so the oak adds texture rather than obvious toast. This bottling is vegan friendly.
Open it for a weeknight dinner rather than a special occasion, lightly chilled for twenty minutes first. It suits roast chicken, pork, mushroom pasta, grilled salmon and charcuterie, and it is forgiving enough to pour for a mixed table.
