Carmenère is Chile's signature red grape, and this Special Cuvée from Montes is a clear, generous statement of it: 90% Carmenère with 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, grown in the Colchagua Valley and bottled at 14.5% ABV.
The colour is deep carmine red. Aromatic intensity is high, with ripe black plum, fig syrup, cherry and blackberry meeting a complex layer of toasted oak that brings chocolate, tobacco and leather. The palate is rounded and balanced, carrying black pepper, toast and a dairy softness, with good body, elegance and a long finish. The varietal character comes through plainly, which makes this a useful bottle for anyone learning what Carmenère actually tastes like.
Montes recommends red meats, Mongolian beef, pork chops, spaghetti Bolognese, lamb chops or mushroom ravioli. Open it half an hour before serving and pour it a touch cool.
