Named after the turrets that surmount the Chateau of Pichon Longueville, Les Tourelles de Longueville has its own dedicated portion of the vineyard, drawn mainly from the Merlot-planted Sainte Anne plot. As the second wine of Chateau Pichon Baron it is open, generous and full bodied, and James Suckling scored this 2018 at 94 points.
The blend is 66% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Expect ripe, expressive blackberry, plum and red-cherry fruit framed by cedar and spice from 18 months in barriques, with polished tannins and a fresh, persistent finish that marks an excellent Pauillac vintage.
This is classed-growth Bordeaux character at a friendlier entry point. Serve it with roast lamb, ribeye, duck or aged hard cheeses, and give it an hour in a decanter. Drinking well now and built to reward patience.
