Gran Lomo is 100% Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina, the region that made the grape famous. It is a balanced, straightforward red, clear in appearance, built for drinking rather than debating.
The aromas are powerful and fruit-led: plum, cherry and red berry. The tannins are smooth and round, so it goes down easily without feeling thin, and the finish shows a touch of anise that keeps it interesting.
This is a barbecue wine in the most literal sense. Argentina drinks Malbec with fire-cooked beef for good reason, and Gran Lomo does the same job here, whether that is a grilled steak, pork belly, liempo, or lamb chops off the coals. Serve it just below room temperature, around 16 to 18C, and open it a few minutes before pouring. Good value for a weeknight table or a large group.
