This is a single-site German Riesling from Mäushöhle, a vineyard in the village of Deidesheim, in the Pfalz. Deidesheim and neighbouring Forst are among the best addresses in the region, and Weingut Dr. Deinhard has long worked their sites. The estate today sits under von Winning's ownership and winemaking direction, with the Dr. Deinhard label given to fruity styles raised in stainless steel rather than wood.
Spätlese is a Prädikat under German wine law, meaning the grapes were picked in a later pass at higher ripeness than a Kabinett. In practice that gives a wine with more concentration and a gentle sweetness balanced by Riesling's natural acidity.
Serve it properly cold, around 8 to 10C. Off-dry Riesling is one of the few wines that genuinely handles chilli and spice, so it is a good match for Thai and Sichuan food, and equally at home with pork or fresh fruit.
