Claret has been the crown jewel of Francis Ford Coppola's Diamond Collection since the range began. It is a Bordeaux-style blend drawing on a diversity of California vineyards, whose different soils give the wine its complexity, and the current blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Syrah, 6% Syrah, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Segalin.
The nose gives plum, blackberry, tobacco and seasoned oak. On the palate look for cherry, cassis, violet candy and cocoa, with clove, pepper, caramel and cream running underneath. It carries the California appellation, sits at 13.5% alcohol and spends 14 months in French oak, which explains the polish on the tannins.
This is a generous, welcoming red rather than a severe one, and it suits roast beef, burgers off the grill, mushroom pasta or a cheese board at the end of a long dinner. Serve it slightly below room temperature.
