The Footbolt has become shorthand for classic, consistent McLaren Vale Shiraz. Every d'Arenberg estate owned and leased vineyard is NASAA Certified for organic and biodynamic processes, and that philosophy encourages strong root systems, lively tannin structures, soil character and fine minerality, with low yields, concentrated flavour and excellent natural acidity.
The 2021 is crimson-purple with a subtle ruby halo. Swirl it and you get dark plum, blackberry, boysenberry, subtle black pepper and a touch of liquorice. The palate is where it turns interesting: rich, opulent black fruits and plums intertwined with cured meat, mocha, peppery spice and a plush coat of red cherries. The tannins are ripe and velvety, and acidity, alcohol and oak are impeccably balanced through a long finish.
It is 14.5% ABV, 1.2 g/l residual sugar, from McLaren Vale, South Australia. Great drinking now with lamb or a peppered steak, and it will cellar well too.
