Consigna is made by Felix Solis in La Mancha, the broad, sun exposed plateau in central Spain where the Solis family has been producing wine since the nineteenth century.
This bottling is 100% Shiraz. It is a deep garnet red, with red berry and spice aromas, then flavours of dark berry fruits, a note of pepper and a longer finish than the price suggests. The body sits in the medium range, so it drinks easily without feeling thin.
Serve it lightly cool, around 16C, and it does its best work with everyday food: burgers, pizza, sausages and hard cheese. Spanish Shiraz is still an unusual sight on a shelf, which makes this a low risk way to try one. If you keep a case of house red for weeknights and unplanned guests, this is the sort of bottle that earns its place without any fuss.
