Baron de Brane is the second wine of Château Brane-Cantenac, a classed growth estate in Margaux, and it is made from the same vineyards and the same hands as the grand vin. The 2016 is a Bordeaux blend led by Merlot, reported at roughly 65% Merlot with 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc.
Margaux is the most perfumed of the Left Bank appellations, and this shows it: a sweet, lively core of red cherry and plum, medium bodied, bright and fresh rather than heavy, with the refinement the commune is known for.
It is approachable now, which is the appeal of a second wine. Decant it for half an hour and serve it at cool room temperature with roast lamb, steak, duck or a hard aged cheese.
