Santa Luz draws this Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile's Central Valley, the warm, reliable heartland that made Chilean Cabernet a household name. The 2019 is bursting with juicy blackcurrant, cherry and cassis flavours, supported by well-rounded, velvety tannins that keep the fruit in shape rather than drying it out.
It is full bodied and dry at 13.5% alcohol, generous on the palate and easy to understand from the first sip, which makes it a good first step for anyone learning what Cabernet tastes like.
Open it with food. It is a fine accompaniment to roast pork, grilled steak, tomato-based pasta dishes and strong cheeses, and it will hold up to anything charred over coals. Decant briefly if you have time, serve slightly below room temperature, and let the fruit do the talking.
