Beeslaar Pinotage is 100% Pinotage from Stellenbosch, and it makes the case for the variety at a serious level rather than a novelty one.
The colour is deep ruby red. Aromas are brooding: black fruits, dark chocolate, savoury meats and a touch of cinnamon spice. Finely grained tannins give the wine a muscular structure, beautifully supported by a plush red fruit profile with flavours of cranberries and raspberries. Elegance, balance and a long dry finish are the hallmarks here.
The numbers back that up. It is 14.83% ABV with residual sugar of 2.60 g/l, so it is properly dry. Give it half an hour in a decanter and serve it just below room temperature. It belongs with grilled lamb, braised short rib, boerewors or anything cooked over charcoal, and it is a rewarding pour for a drinker who thinks they already know what Pinotage tastes like.
