Abrie Beeslaar built his reputation making Pinotage in Stellenbosch, and this is the 2020 under his own name, in a 1500ml magnum. Tim Atkin MW gave it 96 points in his South Africa Report 2022, and Christian Eedes of winemag.co.za scored it 95.
It is deep ruby-red, with brooding aromas of black fruit, dark chocolate, savoury meats and a touch of cinnamon spice. Finely grained tannins give it muscular structure, and a plush red fruit profile of cranberry and raspberry fills in behind. Elegance, balance and a long dry finish are the hallmarks. It is 100% Pinotage at 14.83% ABV, with 2.60 g/l residual sugar.
The magnum matters twice over. It ages more slowly, so this will reward the cellar, and it is the right format for a table of eight and a serious cut of beef. Decant it.
